Pakistan on Saturday expressed deep concern and anguish over the rejection of Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami’s review petition against death penalty.

Pakistan, which experienced dismemberment of one of its two parts through the birth of Bangladesh in 1971, also called for reconciliation in matters relating to the “events” during the war of liberation.

On Thursday, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected the review petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, clearing all the legal barriers towards his execution.

“We have noted with deep concern and anguish the dismissal of the review application on the death sentence, by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, for Jamaat-e-Islami leader Matiur Rahman Nizami,” read a release of Pakistan foreign ministry.

It further said, “We have also been following the reaction of the international community and human rights organisations to the controversial trials in Bangladesh, related to the events of 1971.”

“There is a need for reconciliation in Bangladesh in accordance with the spirit of Tripartite Agreement of April 1974 which calls for a forward-looking approach in matters relating to the events of 1971,” said Pakistan.
