Fazal Shahabuddin, a poet and journalist from the 1960s and founding editor of the once popular weekly magazine Bichitra, has died in Dhaka. He was 78.
Fazal died in the early hours of Sunday at his home in Madya Basabo in the capital.
A namaj-e-janaza (funeral prayer) was held at the National Press Club premises after Asar prayers and another was held at the Bangla Academy at 5:00pm today. The poet was buried at the capital's Banani graveyard.
Fazal Shahbudin became popular in the 1960s as a poet. He was also a novelist, storywriter and translator. His first book was published in 1965 and the last one in 2013.
He also worked as the editor of weekly Sachitra Sandhani and for Dainik Bangla.
His contributions to Bangla literature got him the Bangla Academy Award in 1973 and the Ekushey Padak in 1988.
His famous poetries include "Trishner Agnite Eka", "Akangkhita Asundar", "Atatayi Surjasta". He is also author of a novel titled "Ekjan Ananda Sharir".
