The family of Rashedun Nabi Bhuiyan Tipu, who the police said hacked Jagannath University student Nazim Uddin Samad, has said Rashedun was staying at his village home in Comilla when Nazim Uddin was killed in Dhaka.

At a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Monday noon, DMP’s counter terrorism unit chief Monirul Islam said the police detained Rashedun Nabi from Sayedabad bus terminal area in the capital city on Sunday night.

Monirul said Rashedun Nabi was detained in a joint drive of members of counter terrorism unit and DMP’s Detective Branch (DB-South).

The police officer claimed that Rashedun is an active member of militant outfit Ansar Al Islam.

Monirul also claimed that Rashedun Nabi confessed before the police during the primary interrogation that he along with two others hacked Nazim Uddin Samad to death.

However, Rashedun Nabi’s family claimed that a group of people introducing them as members of law enforcement agencies, picked him up from their residence five months ago.

Rashedun Nabi’s father Abdul Bari Bhuiyan, who is the president of Comilla’s Nangalkot municipality ward 1 unit of ruling an Awami League, claimed that his son was a pious man. He used to say prayers five-time a day. He was not involved in any criminal activities.

He, however, said he wants punishment of his son if Rashedun is really involved in the militancy.

Rashedun’s paternal uncle Sadek Hossain Bhuiyan, also Nangalkot upazila AL’s joint convener and Nangalkot Hasan Memorial Degree College’s principal, echoed his brother.

He said Rashedun Nabi was picked up on 19 May night from their Nangalkot residence.

He said they even went to the police station to file a general diary (GD) about the picking up of Rashedun but the police did not register the GD.

He also claimed that his nephew was staying at Nangalkot house when Nazim Uddin was killed in Dhaka.

The 30-year-old, Rashedun Nabi, was married to Tahera Tasnim in 2010. His wife Tahera, a mother of three, said her husband was not involved in any militant organisation.

“How can he be involved in the militancy when he used to struggle for earning the livelihood for his family,” Tahera asked while talking to the Prothom Alo on Monday.

Nangalkot police station Sub-Inspector Mozammel Hossain said the police got a list of two militants of Nangalkot. Rashedun Nabi was one of them.

Asked about the Rashedun’s family claim that the police denied to accept the GD, the police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Aiyub said, “I know nothing why the GD was not registered at that time.”

He said he was not in charge of the police station when the Rashedun Nabi’s family went to file the GD.

On 6 April this year, a group of assailants swooped on Jagannath University’s law student Nazim Uddin, also a Ganajagaran Mancha activist, at Sutrapur in the capital, and hacked and shot him, leaving him dead on the spot.
