SC upholds BGMEA Bhaban demolition order

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the High Court's order for demolishing the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) building in the capital city.

The multi-storied building is constructed in the middle of the Hatirjheel-Begunbari canal despite concerns from the green activists.

A four-member bench headed by the chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order rejecting a leave to appeal against the High Court order.

On 3 April 2011, HC had delivered the demolition verdict after holding hearing on a suo moto rule the HC had issued over the legality of the building.

It had ordered to demolish it in 90 days over environment concerns.
