Sayedee files review petition seeking acquittal

Jamaat-e-Islami nayeb-e-amir Delwar Hossain Sayedee on Sunday filed a review petition with the Appellate Division of Supreme Court seeking acquittal of his sentence of imprisonment until death.

Sayedee’s son Masud Sayedee told the Prothom Alo the review plea was filed on 16 grounds seeking acquittal of his father from the war crime charges.
He said her father’s lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain will brief the media later in this connection.

Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on 28 February 2013, convicted Sayedee of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to death.

The court found him guilty in eight of 20 charges which included murder, rape, arson, loot, abduction and persecution in different places in Pirojpur.

Sayedee filed the appeal against the death verdict on 28 March 2013, denying his involvement in the crimes.

The Appellate Division on 17 September 2014 commuted his death sentence to imprisonment till natural death.

The Apex Court released the full verdict on 31 December 2015, and copies of the verdict reached the tribunal on 3 January 2016.

Meanwhile, the state prosecution on 12 January filed a review petition seeking death penalty for Sayedee on charge of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
