Noted litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq died of cancer in capital’s United Hospital on Tuesday evening.

He was 81.

Confirming his death, United Hospital’s communications manager Shagufta Anwar told Prothom Alo that Syed Shamsul Haq breathed his last at 5:26pm.

Equally popular as a poet, playwright, lyricist and novelist, Syed Shamsul Haq had been honoured with Independence Award, Ekushey Padak and Bangla Academy Award.

He was flown to London on 15 April this year for treatment and was diagnosed with lung cancer there.

As physicians in London found no hope for his recovery, the versatile author returned home on 2 September. Since then, he was undergoing treatment at the United Hospital.

Born on 27 December 1935 in Kurigram, he left behind his wife Anwara Syed Haq, son Ditiyo Syed Haq and daughter Bidita Syed Haq.

Popular feature film ‘Guerrilla’ was made in 2011 based on his famous fiction ‘Nishiddho Loban’.

Some of his famous works are ‘Khelaraam Khele Ja’, ‘Payer Awaz Pawa Jaay’, ‘Athaba Samantaral’ and ‘Pherari Jahajera Apekkhyay’.
