Tk7 cr fish, fry lost to flood in Sylhet, Sunamganj

Fish and fry worth Tk seven crore were washed away by flood in recent time in Sylhet and Sunamganj.

Sources concerned said flash flood triggered by persistent rain and onrush of water from hills have submerged six upazilas of Sunamganj and three upazilas of Sylhet, causing extensive damage to dwelling houses and roads and fisheries sector in the two districts.

The flood-affected upazilas were Dowarabazar, Shalla, Tahirpur, Bishwamvarpur, Sadar and Derai in Sunamganj and Companiganj, Jaintiapur and Gowainghat in Sylhet.

About 344.8 tonnes of fish and fish fry of 743 water bodies in Sunamganj upazilas were washed away by the flood, according to sources at the district fisheries office.

Dowarabazar is the worst-affected upazila as 250 tonnes of fish worth Tk five crore vanished from 350 water bodies in the flood.

Flood caused damage amounting to Tk seven crore in the fisheries sector of both Sylhet and Sunamganj. 

Fisheries officer in Sunanganj Sultan Ahmad said they will take initiative for rehabilitation of the affected fish farmers, adding that all kinds of supports will be given to the fish cultivators to boost fish production in the district.

However, officials concerned could not confirm exactly the extent of damage caused by flood to the fisheries sector in Sylhet.

Contacted, deputy director of Fisheries Department in the district ASM Rashedul Hoque said they will be able to inform about the extent of damage caused by flood to fisheries sector in the district very soon.

Asked whether they would provide assistance to the affected fish cultivators, the fisheries official said they are yet to get any information from the government high-ups in this regard.
