Tower Hamlets Council makes 1st Bangladeshi woman speaker

The first-ever Bangladeshi woman speaker of Tower Hamlets Council has been elected without opposition, reports The Docklands and East London.
Sabina Akhtar took up the post unopposed at the annual general meeting at the town hall on 17 May, according to the newspaper.
“Tower Hamlets is the most exciting borough in the UK,” Sabina Akhtar was quoted to have told the meeting. “There are so many opportunities here."
Her appointment was welcomed by mayor John Biggs.
