Tripura girl ‘raped’ in Cox’s Bazar

A Class-IX student belonging to ethnic minority community Tripura was allegedly raped by a young man in Chakaria upazila on Friday night, reports UNB.

Police arrested the suspect -- Shimu Barua, 30, son of Badal Barua alias Aiyub Khan of Chairmanpara in Lama municipality of Bandarban –- over the incident and a case was filed.

According to the case statement, the incident took place at the Hebron Mission compound in Chakaria upazila when the girl was enjoying a cultural programme organised by Awami League’s Lama upazila unit.

When the girl went to a nearby tube-well for drinking water around 8:00pm, Shimu took her to an isolate place and raped her there after gagging her.

Hearing the victim’s scream, locals rushed in and caught him red-handed while the victim was taken to Lama Health Complex.

Oppela Raju, officer-in-charge of Lama Police Station, said as the place of occurrence is under Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria upazila, Shimu was handed over to the Chakaria Police Station immediately.

Chakaria OC Md Habibur Rahman said Hebron Mission’s dormitory manager Suvash Tripura filed a case over the incident.

The accused was sent to jail through a court on Saturday, he added.
