Violent acts on the down: IGP

Inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque on Sunday said the number of acts of sabotage has gone down due to a joint effort by police and countrymen.
The IGP said incidents of violence has come down drastically as they have arrested 500 people throughout the country during the ongoing hartal and blockade called by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
Shahidul said this while addressing the inaugural session of a 21-day workshop titled 'Training on Transnational Crimes SAARC Perspective', organised by Bangladesh Police at Police Staff College in the capital.
Rector Fatema Begum presided over the function while high officials of the police and foreign ministry were present on the occasion.
A total of 20 police officers, including nine superintendents of police from Bangladesh, two each from Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, and Maldives and one from Nepal, are taking part in the workshop.
Terming transnational organised crimes a global threat, the police chief said, "Joint efforts of the SAARC listed countries is the only possible way to contain organised crimes such as human trafficking, smuggling of goods and drugs, illegal firearms trading, money laundering, and militancy."
