AL picks wife in place of yaba godfather Bodi
Abdur Rahman Bodi’s wife Shahin Akter Chowdhury is going to contest the next general elections at the Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhia-Teknaf) constituency replacing the controversial ruling Awami League’s member of parliament (MP).
The AL move has made the local party men ‘frustrated’ while the voters are ‘critical’.
The party men think nothing will be changed once the Bodi’s wife has been nominated.
AL general secretary Obaidul Quader earlier on Tuesday said Bodi’s nomination has been cancelled to avoid criticism and his wife will replace him in the constituency.
According to the party officials, a total of 22 AL leaders submit nomination forms to vie in the constituency.
District Juba League president Sohel Ahmad Bahadur told Prothom Alo that a strong candidate should have been given nomination to compete against the strong candidate of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
On the other hand, he added, people are happy after cancelation of Bodi’s nomination.
Sohel Ahmad also said, “But, it will create no difference should Bodi’s wife be given nomination.”
The tourism town Cox’s Bazar is battered with human trafficking and yaba peddling. The Awami League parliament member, Abdur Rahman Bodi, is the chief patron of the crimes.
Administrative officials earlier said, not only Badi, but 23 of his relatives, including his three brothers, are also involved in the illegal activities.
Bodi also tops the home ministry’s list of 79 leading human traffickers of Cox’s Bazar. He is also identified by the Narcotics Control Department as the chief patron of the yaba smugglers.
