Amu dismisses HRW's demand to disband RAB
Dismissing the rights group Human Rights Watch's (HRW) demand to disband the elite force RAB, industries minister Amir Hossain Amu on Monday said it is the internal matter of Bangladesh.
"It's our internal matter. We won't take any decision based on their (HRW) letter," he said.
Amu was talking to reporters after presiding over a meeting of the cabinet committee on law and order at the home ministry on Monday.
The New York-based HRW in a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the Bangladesh government should disband the RAB.
"Until it is disbanded, RAB should be made into an entirely civilian force by withdrawing all military officers and soldiers from its membership," the global rights watchdog said in the letter published in its website on Monday.
About the outcome of the meeting, the minister said the law enforcement agencies have been given instructions to remain alert so that there is no deterioration in the law-and-order situation ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
About BNP's threat to wage a movement after Eid, he hoped that BNP will not repeat the mistake it did before the last national election.
