Bangladesh enforces strict restrictions from 1 July, army to be deployed

Strict restrictions are being enforced from 1 July to contain the spread of coronavirus and none will be allowed to go out except for emergencies.

After the cabinet meeting today, Monday, cabinet secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam made the disclosure at a press briefing.

The top bureaucrat also said alongside the police, BGB and battalion police, the army will also be on patrol to enforce the restrictions.

They have been given as much authority as required to take necessary action, he added.

Khandker Anwarul Islam said, from 6:00am on 1 July till 12:00 midnight on 7 July, strict restrictions will be in place. However, these restrictions may be extended for another week if necessary.

A notification giving details on the matter will be issued in this regard tomorrow, Tuesday.

Meanwhile, from today, Monday, public transport, shopping malls and markets will remain closed. These restrictions will remain in effect up till 1 July. After that the strict restrictions will come into force.

At the cabinet meeting presided over by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the disaster management and relief ministry was given directives to provide assistance to the poor people, particularly those the urban poor, under the social safety net programme.

The cabinet also approved drafts of the Special Security Force (SSF) Act and Highway Act at the meeting.
