Former UGC professor Anwar Hossain passes away

Md Anwar Hossain, a retired professor of Dhaka University’s mathematics department, has passed away.

He was 77.

Anwar, also former professor of University Grant Commission (UGC), breathed his last at his home in the capital city around 8.45 pm on Thursday after suffering from old-age complications, said mathematics department professor Md Shahidul Islam.

His namaz-e-janaza was held on the premises of Dhaka University central mosque after Juma prayer. Later, he was buried at Azimpur graveyard, Shahidul Islam added.

He is survived by his wife, a son, friends and a host of well-wishers to mourn his death.

In a condolence message, Dhaka University (DU) vice-chancellor professor Md Akhtaruzzaman expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of the eminent professor.

Professor Hossain was a fellow of Bangladesh Sciences Academy and Senior Associate of International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy.

He also was an honorary fellow of Australian Institute of High Energetic Materials since October 2011.
