The public representatives who will plunder relief materials or get involved in any other irregularity will not be spared, warned local government and rural development minister Md Tazul Islam, reports news agency UNB.

The minister made the warning while talking to newsmen after visiting a number of canals under RAJUK, Dhaka WASA and Water Development Board in the city’s Uttara area on Tuesday.

“The people of Bangladesh have been asked to stay home as elsewhere in the world and the government is distributing relief materials among the poor through local public representatives,” he said.

“We're taking instant action against those found involved in any irregularity. They won't get any mercy for the misdeed. Already, we've expelled some public representatives for plundering relief materials in different parts of the country and criminal cases have been filed against them,” he said.

Earlier in the day, road, transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader said that rice thieves will not be spared.

Quader, also general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, said this at a press briefing at his house.

Talking about cleaning up the canals ahead of the monsoon, minister Tazul said the work in this regard is underway.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam and LGRD ministry secretary Mohammad Helal Uddin also accompanied the minister.
