Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, no inhabitant of Saint Martin's island has infected with this virus.

The government has imposed restrictions to stop people moving around to check Covid-19 transmission and the islanders lead normal life.

A total of 925 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Teknaf upazila. However, none of them are from this island in the Bay of Bengal with about a population of 10,000.

Inspector of Saint Martin's Police outpost Masudur Rahman said as the outsiders’ movements in the coral island remain halted, nobody of this island has contracted with Covid-19.

According to the civil surgeon's office, a total of 9,131 people, excluding Rohingya refugees, have contracted Covid-19 up to 31 May in Cox’s Bazar. Of them, 925 people are the residents of Teknaf.

Besides, of 96 deaths in eight upazillas, 56 are from Cox’ Bazar sadar while 11 from Teknaf. But no resident of Saint Martin's has been included in the Teknaf death list.

Health professionals have collected a total of 800 samples from the island. Among them, 300 were the members of the navy, coast guard and police.

Principal of Cox’s Bazar Medical College, Anupam Barua, said due to the limited movement of the outsiders and the open environment, the small island in the Bay of Bengal stays safe from Covid-19.

Union Parishad (UP) chairman of Saint Martin's, Nur Ahmed, said if the movement of the outsiders is controlled, the island will be more secured.
