President of Faridpur town Awami League Nazmul Islam Khandakar aka Leby has been arrested.

Police detained Nazmul from Charkamala area of the town around 12:45pm on Friday.

Witnesses said a team of policemen led by Faridpur Kotwali police station officer-in-change Morshed Alam arrested Nazmul from his office.

Police said he was arrested in a money laundering case.

Earlier police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) filed money laundering case against Faridpur town’s AL former general secretary Sajjad Hossain Barkat and his brother former Faridpur Press Club president Imtiaz Hassan Rubel.

CID’s inspector SM Miraz Al Mahmud filed a case against the brothers at the Kafrul police station in Dhaka on 26 June. Earlier on 19 July, CID took them to its Malibagh office. After an initial two-day remand, they were produced before the court seeking another 10 days in police custody on 21 July. Later, the court granted three-day remand each. The brothers recorded depositions under Section 164 at a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court.

CID’s assistant police superintendent Uttam Kumar has been investigating the case.

He said Rubel and Barkat gave their confessional statements in the case and revealed the names of their ‘patrons’. After concluding the hearing in the case, the two were sent to jail.

Faridpur police superintendent Md Alimuzzaman said Nazmul Hassan has been arrested as per directives of the CID. Nazmul was sent to Faridpur jail following his arrest.

Earlier on 16 May, Faridpur district AL president Subal Chandra Saha’s house in the town came under attack. Following the incident, Subal filed a case with Faridpur Kotwali police station against unidentified persons. On 7 June, police arrested nine people including Sajjad and Imtiaz in the case.
