Hefazat leader Aminul Islam placed on 3-day remand

A Chattogram court on Tuesday put Islamist hardliner Hefazat-e-Islam leader Aminul Islam on three-day remand in the cases filed with Hathazari police station.

The court of senior judicial magistrate Joyonti Rani Das passed the order, court inspector Md Humayun Kabir of Chattogram district police told BSS.

Detective Branch officer-in-charge Keshab Chakraborty, also the investigation officer of the cases, sought a total of 10-day remand to interrogate Aminul Islam in the cases filed with the police station on 26 March, 2021 on charge of vandalism and setting fire to government offices. However, the court granted three-day remand after the hearing, he said.

Aminul Islam, who is Hefazat’s Hathazari municipality committee joint-secretary, is also accused of killing Hefazat’s former chief Shah Ahmed Shafi, according to a complaint filed by his followers.

Earlier, Aminul, who was arrested from Fatikchhari upazila of the district on Wednesday, has confessed before the police about his involvement in the act of violence and vandalism.

Police have, so far, arrested 85 people in these cases. Of them, six gave confessional statement before the court in 10 cases filed with Hathazari police station.
