A housewife was beaten and strangulated to death on Thursday allegedly by her husband and in-laws as her family failed to meet a dowry demand for a nose ring, reports news agency UNB.

The incident took place in Kholahati village of Gaibandha Sadar upazila around noon.

Police said the deceased Sumaiya Aktar, wife of a certain Suja Mia of Kholahati village, was the daughter of Shahin Mia.

Shahin said the couple got married last year and he gave money and other materials as dowry.

“We failed to give only a nose ring that was also demanded as dowry,” he said adding that Sumaiya’s in-laws have been torturing her for this for a long time.

Locals said the altercation started around 11:00am over the nose ring and after some time they beat up and strangulated her to death and fled. The villagers informed police.

The body was sent to Gaibandha Hospital for an autopsy, said officer-in-charge of Sadar police station Khan Mohammad Shahriar.

No arrest has been made yet. It is unclear if any case has been filed over the death.
