Man killed in gunfight: Police

A man was killed in what the law enforcement called a gunfight with them in an area near Kushtia-Ishwardi highway in Bheramara, Kushtia early Tuesday, according to UNB.

The deceased was identified as Mohon Ali, 35, son of Towhidul Islam Hadu, a resident of Daulatkhali village in Daulatpur upazila.

Police said he was robber and accused in 14 robbery cases.

Mohammad Shahjalal, officer-in-charge of Bheramara police station, said they conducted the drive after getting information that a gang of robbers was preparing to commit robbery.

But the robbers opened fire when the police team approached the area. Mohon was killed in the ensuing gunfight, according to the law enforcement.

Police said they also recovered firearms and bullet from the spot.

According to the human rights body Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in 2018 while 370 killed in 2019 in such gunfight, crossfire and shootouts with different law enforcement agencies.

At least 21 people were killed in gunfights, shootouts and crossfires in the first month 2020, ASK said on its website.
