Executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) of Manirampur upazila in Jashore, Sayma Hasan, has been relieved of her charges, said Khulna divisional commissioner M Anwar Hossain Howlader on Saturday.

The AC (land) has been attached to the commissioner’s office. Another person has been given charges. Action will be taken later after an investigation, he added.

Upazila executive officer (UNO) Ahsan Ullah Sharifi said Sufal Golder instead of Sayma Hasan will work with police and army persons to encourage people follow directives to avoid the outbreak of coronavirus disease, COVID-19.

Earlier on Friday, a mobile court punished three elderly men, making them hold their ears and do sit-ups in public for not using masks in Monirampur upazila of Jashore. A video of this went viral on social media and sparked criticism.

The mobile court led by Sayma Hasan conducted the drive in different areas in the upazila in afternoon, reports news agency UNB.

During the drive, the mobile court punished these three elderly men including a van driver and a vegetable vendor in Chinatola Bazar for not wearing masks amid the fear of the outbreak of deadly coronavirus.

The executive magistrate also took a photo of this humiliating punishment in public.

The photo sparked huge criticism on social media at night.

Deputy commissioner Mohammad Shafiul Arfi said that he had seen the photo. “It is not acceptable. She will be served a show cause letter.”
