Papiya, her husband put on fresh 15-day remand

Two Dhaka courts on Wednesday placed suspended Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papiya and her husband on a fresh 15-day remand in three cases filed against them with Airport and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police stations, reports UNB.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Sarafuzzaman Ansari placed them on a 10-day remand in two cases filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station under the Special Powers Act and the Arms Act.

Besides, the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Debrata Biswas granted a five-day remand for them in another case filed with Airport police station under the Special Powers Act.

The courts passed the order after the Rapid Action Battalion produced them before the courts seeking a 30-day remand for each in the three cases.

RAB was given charges to investigate into the three lawsuits filed against Papiya and her husband Mofizur Rahman, court sources said.

A team of RAB arrested Papiya, 28, general secretary of Narsingdi district unit of Mohila Jubo League, her husband Mofizur Rahman, 38, and their two associates -–Sabbir Khandaker, 29, and Sheikh Tayiba, 22, -- from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 22 February while trying to flee the country.

It also recovered seven passports, around Tk 212,000 in cash, Tk 25,600 in fake currency and huge amount of fake currencies of different countries from their possession during the arrest.

On the next day, RAB members raided two city houses of Papiya and her rented presidential suite at a five-star hotel, and seized over Tk 5.84 million in cash among other things.

Two cases were filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station under the Special Power Act and the Arms Act on 24 February and another case filed with Airport police station under the Special Power Act on 23 February.

On 24 February, the couple was placed on a 15-day remand in the three cases.
