A teacher of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur has been arrested on allegations of her satirical post on Facebook over the death of former health and home minister and ruling Awami League leader Mohammed Nasim.

Sirajam Munira, a teacher of Bangla department of the university, was arrested from her Sardarpara residence in Rangpur city around 12:00am on Sunday.

University registrar Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal filed the lawsuit under Digital Security Act with Tajhat police station on Saturday night, said university’s police outpost in-charge sub-inspector (SI) Muhibbul Islam.

Quoting from the case statement, the SI said the teacher uploaded a satirical post after the death of former health minister Mohammed Nasim on Saturday. The post went viral in a very short time.

Following this, Begum Rokeya University unit Chhatra League, student body of Bangladesh Awami League, and local AL leaders demanded punishment of the accused.

Later, around 10:00 at night, Sirajam Munira gave two more Facebook posts apologising for the satirical post.

Begum Rokeya University unit Chhatra League president Abu Monnaf Al Kibria filed a complaint with the police station before the university registrar but that was not registered.

Later, she was shown arrested in the case filed by the registrar while the complaint of Abu Monnaf Al Kibria was accepted as a general diary (GD), the SI said.

“She gave a satirical post on social media about the death of a noted person of the country. I filed a complaint with Tajhat police station. Later, she was shown arrested in a case filed by the university registrar Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal,” said Abu Monnaf Al Kibria.
