Criminal killed in Jashore gunfight: Police

A man was killed in what police called a gunfight with them at Begaritola in Monirampur upazila of Jashore early Friday, reports UNB.

The deceased, identified as Nurul Haque alias Keru of the upazila, was a criminal, the law enforcement said.

Police said he was wanted in 13 criminal cases.

Officer-in-charge of Keshabpur police station Jasim Uddin said they arrested Nurul on Thursday afternoon while he was stealing a motorbike in Chingrakhali area.

Police conducted a drive along with him at night to arrest Nurul’s accomplices in Begaripara where miscreants opened firing targeting police, he said.

The law enforcement members also fired back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight, leaving Nurul dead on the spot, the OC added.

Nurul's body was sent to the morgue of Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he added.

A shooter gun, one round of bullet and four sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, the OC said adding that a case has been filed in this regard.

According to the human rights body Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in 2018 while 370 killed in 2019 in such gunfight, crossfire and shootouts with different law enforcement agencies.

At least 21 people were killed in gunfights, shootouts and crossfires in the first month 2020, ASK said on its website.
