Cabinet secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam on Monday said the government will construct the elevated expressways in the haor region if needed instead of new roads.

The direction has been issued from a cabinet meeting held on Monday at the secretariat with prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Following the meeting, the cabinet secretary briefed the media about the decision.

The cabinet secretary said, “The cabinet meeting today, Monday, directed that no more new roads will be constructed in the haor area. If necessary, the elevated expressway will be built.”

When asked, the cabinet secretary said, “A survey will be carried out to check whether we can build the 150 to 200 metres long bridges every half kilometres distance, considering the matter of flood in the haor area and the subsequent damage in the paddy field.”
