Jamuna Group chairman Nurul Islam Babul has died of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection on Monday.

He was 74.

Babul breathed his last in the afternoon while undergoing treatment at the Evercare Hospital in the city.

Jamuna Group is one of the biggest conglomerates of the country spanning its business in apparel, chemical, leather, motorcycle, electronics, beverage and toiletries sectors.

The group also owns Jamuna Television and Dainik Jugantor.

UNB adds: Babul, also a freedom fighter, left behind wife Salma Islam, former state minister for women and children affairs, one son, three daughters and a host of relatives to mourn his death.

Babul had been undergoing treatment at the Evercare Hospital since 14 June.

A ten-member medical board was formed for his treatment at the hospital.

Nurul Islam founded Jamuna group in 1974 and established 41 organisations in industries and service sectors.

Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and home minister Asaduzzaman Khan expressed deep shock at the death of Jamuna Group chairman.
