Litterateur Bashir Al Helal has died of old-age complications at his own residence in Mohammadpur of Dhaka at 1:45pm on Tuesday. He was 85.

Syed Rownaq Murad, son of Bashir Al Helal, told Prothom Alo that his father was suffering from Alzheimer disease. He will be buried at martyred intellectuals graveyard in the capital’s Rayerbazar.

Bashir Al Helal, the former director of Bangla Academy, was born on 6 January in 1936 in Murshidabad of West Bengal.

He won Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1993 for his outstanding contribution in Bengali literature.
