BNP MP Rumeen Farhana detained in Ashuganj

BNP lawmaker from reserved seat Rumeen Farhana has allegedly been detained by police at a Brahmanbaria hotel on her way to attend a rally in the district town demanding Khaleda Zia's release.

Rumeen alleged that the police held her for an hour at Bhairab toll plaza. After an altercation with the law enforcers, she moved towards Ashuganj upazila again where the police detained her again. She said policemen are obstructing her attendance at the meeting.

“I sent letters to Brahmanbaria’s deputy commissioner and police super and also sent text messages to them. But they did not respond. I would go to my district and this is my right. Under which law can the police arrest me?

She said police cordoned and took her to Ujan Bhati hotel in Ashuganj and she will hold a press conference at the hotel.

Asked, the officer in charge of Ashuganj police station Azad Rahman told Prothom Alo that Rumeen was not allowed to go to Brahmanbaria as section 144 has been imposed there.

The district administration imposed section 144 in pourashava area as BNP and ruling party student wing Chhatra League called meetings in the same place.

After the administration’s move, BNP is preparing to hold the rally at Battali Bazar in Sadar upazila. BNP men have thronged the area outside the pourashava in the afternoon.

BNP convening committee leader Hafizur Rahman Mollah told Prothom Alo at around 1:15pm that BNP standing committee member Amir Kharsu Mahmud Chowdhury, Brahmanbaria-2 MP Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan, BNP chairperson’s advisor Syed AK Ekramuzzaman and economic affairs secretary Khaled Hossain moved towards Battali to attend the rally.

Earlier on Friday, police detained district BNP coordinator Md Jillur Rahman, former general secretary Jahirul Haque, former organising secretary Sirajul Islam and poura BNP’s Mizanur Rahman.
