Jute mill workers stage demo demanding arrears in Dinajpur

The workers of a jute mill on Sunday staged demonstrations demanding their arrears and reopening of the mill in Hili of Dinajpur, reports UNB.

The protesters gathered at the entrance of Mesars Arnu Jute Mill around 11:00am and started demonstrations, disrupting vehicular movement in the area, witnesses said.

Sub-inspector of Hakimpur police station said an hour later they brought the situation under control after discussion with the mill authorities.

Workers said their mill authorities closed the mill last month after giving them small amount of relief (10 kg rice, 3kg potato, one kg oil).

They gathered at the mill gate in the morning as they were given assurance that their arrears will be paid on 26 April, the protesters said.

Mill manager Mizanur Rahman said around 800 workers were working at the mill and they failed to pay the workers as export of the mill's products to India remained suspended due to coronavirus lockdown.

The workers will be paid after reopening of the mill this week, he said.
