Robber killed in gunfight: Police

A suspected robber was killed in what the police called gunfight with them at Haripur Salda in Kushtia early Wednesday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Parvez Khan, from Aruapara Rajarhat in the district.

Tipped off that a robber gang was taking preparations to commit robbery, a team of police conducted a drive in the area in the wee hours, said Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Kushtia model police station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the hoodlums opened fire on them forcing them to fire back.

Parvez was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries.

Later, he was taken to Kushtia general hospital where doctors declared him dead.

One pistol, one magazine, three bullets and a sharp weapon were recovered from the spot.

Parvez was wanted in nine cases, said police.

According to the human rights body, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 370 people were killed in alleged gunfights, crossfires or shootouts with the law enforcement agencies including police, RAB, BGB in 2019.

At least 45 people were killed in gunfights, shootouts and crossfires in the first two months 2020, ASK said on its website.
