A schoolboy was killed in a scuffle between two groups of minor boys over throwing sands at each other at Meghna river in Narsingdi on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Farhan Ahmed alias Anik, a 10th grader at Satirpara KK Institute and son of a certain Shahidullah Miah from Satirpara in the town.

According to locals, witnesses and the family of the deceased, two groups of adolescent boys had organised cruises on Meghna river following Eid-ul-Azha. They were playing music with high volume on the boats when they reached below Sheikh Hasina bridge.

They said the boys locked into a scuffle over throwing sands at each other. Farhan was hit with a panel of the deck during the scuffle and immediately fell into the river around 5:30pm.

The body of 15-year-old Farhan was recovered about half an hour later and sent to Narsingdi sadar hospital. Later, Narsingdi model police station sent the body to morgue for a postmortem.

There were hundreds of people at the site as the bridge area is a popular leisure spot connecting char (sand bars) areas with the town.

A video shared on Facebook shows the scuffle in which the two groups attacked each other with sticks and boat panels. The victim was also seen to have been beaten and falling into the river.

Police, however, are probing whether the video is actually related to the incident.

No cases were filed on behalf of the deceased family, but police reportedly were working on filing a case.
