Woman burnt to death in Chattogram slum

A 70-year-old woman died and her daughter sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out at a slum in Akbar Shah area of Chattogram city on Sunday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Rezia Begum, wife of Fazlul Haque of Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur district.

The fire originated in a slum near CDA rail line from a short circuit early in the morning and spread quickly, said Zahir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Akbar Shah police station. On information, three firefighting units went to the spot and extinguished the blaze after one hour.

Rezia and her 40-year-old daughter Khadiza got stuck in a room. Local people managed to pull Khadiza out but they failed to rescue her mother. Fire service men recovered the charred body of Rezia. The body was taken to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.

Five shanties were also gutted in the fire, said senior station officer of Chattogram Agrabad Fire Service, Mohammad Enamul Haque.
