Ruling Awami League mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy on Thursday called on the election commission to hold the Narayanganj civic polls in a free and fair manner as, what she said, its results will not change regime.

“I will tell you [EC], please present us with such an election which does not make the government controversial. Because, this election is not an election for changing the government. It's a local government election,” she said.

Ivy made her observation at a views exchange meeting with the chief election commissioner, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, in the chair.

The election commission organised the meeting at the Narayanganj Club with a view to take opinions of the candidates of the civic polls slated for 22 December.

Rejecting the fear of her rival Shakhawat Hossain Khan of the BNP whether Narayanganj voters would at all be able to exercise their franchise on the polling day, Ivy said there is no such fear as the Narayanganj people have already taken the decision who they will vote for.

“I myself had voiced such fear before the last election. But the law and order scenario had changed completely on the polling day. That election was praised across the country,” said Ivy.

She said she wanted no favour from any one as she had faith and confidence in the Narayanganj people.
