Two die of earthquake panic

At least two people have died of panic-stricken rush in Sunamganj after a 5.5 magnitude earthquake originated in India’s Tripura shook Bangladesh on Tuesday noon.
The deceased are Saima Akhter, 14, hailing from Chhatak upazila and Hiron Mia, 25, of Jagannathpur upazila.
Nadiur Rahman, 13, hailing from Jagannathpur upazila was injured.
Hiron Miah, 60, of Asampur village in Jagannathpur upazila, died of cardiac arrest after being panicked by the shake.
In Chhatak upazila, Saima Akter, a class-VIII student of Chhatak Cement Factory School and daughter of Shamsul Haq, died as she fell from the staircase while rushing out of their four-storey house, said Ashiquzzaman, officer-in-charge of Chhatak Police Station.
A moderate 5.5 magnitude earthquake jolted parts of the country at 3.09pm, an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) confirmed.
The epicentre of the earthquake was near India-Bangladesh border region, said the BMD.
In capital city of Dhaka, panic-stricken people were seen rushing out of their residences.
