BNP to stage countrywide demo tomorrow

BNP will stage demonstrations across the country on Monday protesting the attack on the motorcade of its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in Chittagong on his way to hillslides-hit Rangamati, reports UNB.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the protest programme at an emergency press conference at BNP's Kandirpar office in Comilla.

Fakhrul and three other party senior leaders were injured as local Awami League supporters allegedly attacked his motorcade at Isakhali in Rangunia upazila in Chittagong.

"This is an attack on the country's stability and democracy, and such incident is an ominous sign for democracy. The attack was made so that BNP leaders can't witness the government's failure to tackle the series of hillslides in Rangamati," Rizvi said.

The BNP leader said their party leaders and activists will stage demonstrations in all district towns, metropolitan cities and all wards of Dhaka city on Monday to protest the attack.

"The government is obstructing us from visiting the disaster-affected areas, showing it despotic attitude," he alleged.
Rizvi alleged Awami League attacked the BNP leaders also to send out a message that they are not willing to hold a fair election. "The country's people won't remain safe anywhere in the country until the fall of the current regime."

Rizvi came here in the morning to appear before a court in an arson attack case failed against him and other BNP leaders and activists.
