‘Attack an arrogant bid of govt to erase last sign of democracy’
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday alleged that the attack on the party secretary general’s motorcade is an arrogant bid of the government to erase the last sign of democracy in the country.
In a statement issued a few hours after an attack on BNP secretary general’s motorcade, Khaleda, also former prime minister, said the attack was aimed at diverting people’s attention from the government’s failings to take necessary measures to protect lives in the landslide-affected areas.
A motorcade of a BNP delegation led by its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came under attack in Ichhakhali of Rangunia in Chittagong on Sunday, on its way to landslide-hit areas on Sunday morning.
At least five to seven BNP men including Mirza Fakhrul, BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury sustained injuries, according to the claim of BNP leaders.
Khaleda strongly condemned the “heinous and cowardly” attack.
She said, “The example of Awami terrorists attacking BNP senior leaders’ motorcade and assaulting them physically is an arrogant bid of the government to erase last signs democracy.
“This incident is another manifestation of politics of vendetta of the current unelected government. Awami League has always resorted to hooliganism to cling to the state power.
“Numerous people were killed in the landslides and thousands were injured. The cry of the family members of those were killed and injured has made the air heavy in the area.
“The people in the affected area are passing inhumane lives for lack of basic needs like drinking water, food, and medicine. As communications and electricity networks are snapped, a human disaster has engulfed the area.
“The head of the government is travelling abroad instead of standing by the side of the affected people. The head of the government has always neglected to stand by the affected people.
“Awami League considers the people of Bangladesh its biggest enemy and that’s why it never stands by their side. It enjoys people’s sufferings,” alleged the former prime minister.
The former prime minister alleged that obstructing the BNP team from visiting the affected area is a tactic to cover the failings of the government.
