Senior judge of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division Abdul Wahhab Miah resigned on Friday, officials concerned confirmed.

His resignation followed appointment on Friday of his junior Appellate Division judge Syed Mahmud Hossain as the country's next chief justice.

Justice Wahhab Miah sent his resignation letter to the president and the officials of the Bangabhaban, the president's official residence, said they received the letter.

The president on Friday afternoon appointed the second most senior SC judge Syed Mahmud Hossain as the 22nd chief justice (CJ) of Bangladesh. He will take oath as the 22nd chief justice of the country on Saturday.

Wahhab Miah was discharging duties as acting chief justice after former chief justice SK Sinha resigned from the post in November.
