The High Court has accepted the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail petition against the verdict in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The higher court on Thursday set the bail hearing for Sunday after staying a fine order against the BNP chief by the Dhaka Special Court-5.

An HC bench comprising justice M Enayetur Rahim and justice Shahidul Karim directed the judicial court to send the files of the case to the High Court within 15 days.

Lawyers AJ Mohammad Ali and Joynul Abedin and Mahbub Uddin Khokon represented the BNP chief at the court while attorney general Mahbubey Alam stood for the state.

On 8 February this year, the Dhaka Special Court-5 sentenced the former prime minister to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The BNP chairperson has been imprisoned in the Nazimuddin Road jail.

The special court also sentenced five others, including the BNP chief’s son Tarique Rahman, for 10 years in the graft case.

Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia also filed a separate bail petition with the High Court in the graft case.
