Opposition BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal aka JCD on Tuesday alleged that one of its leaders in Netrokona district was shot dead by the law enforcement in the name of gunfight.

JCD, in a press release, said the law enforcement had detained Netrokona municipality JCD leader Amzad Hossain around 3:00am early Tuesday from his Nagra Anandabazar house and later his body was found on the bank of Ponsha river near Bara Wari bridge.

Protesting at the killing, JCD alleged that the Awami League government has undertaken a mission to kill its activists in the guise of the anti-drug drive.

It also alleged that the ruling party men are involved in the drug business, but they are not being targeted.

When contacted by Prothom Alo, Netrokona police super Joydeb Chowdhury denied the allegation that Amzad was detained from his house. He claimed that the gunfight took place when the law enforcement was conducting a drive to arrest him.

“When we were attempting to arrest him, he and his associates opened fire on us and we had to retaliate in self-defence,” claimed the police super.

The police officer, however, could not give details of the killing incident.

He said Amzad was accused in 14 cases including three murder cases and four drug cases.
