Committee to monitor execution of traffic rules

An 18-member committee has been formed to monitor the implementation of all activities related to improvement of traffic rules and ensuring of road safety across the country.

A notice to this effect was issued by the prime minister's office (PMO) on Monday.

The PMO secretary and director general (administration) were made president and member secretary of the body.

The committee would monitor the implementation of traffic law on highways following the instruction of the prime minister, implementation of different projects of different organisations for traffic management and road safety, inspect the short-term and long-term work plans of different organisations and their execution.

The body would also coordinate the activities of different voluntary organisations such as scouts, girls guide and Red Crescent Society, monitor and decide other issues over the traffic management and road safety.

The move came after a recent widespread student protests jolted the country following an accident involving two buses in race that killed two college students in Dhaka city's Kurmitola area on 29 July.
