2 killed in alleged gunfights in 2 dists

Two persons were killed in separate incidents of what police called gunfights with them in Bogura and Narayanganj districts early Thursday.

The deceased are Akand, 32, from Manikchawak area of Bogura and Mobarak, 50, of Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj, reports UNB.

In Bogura, Akand was killed in a reported gunfight between police and a gang of miscreants in Matidhali Pollimangal area of sadar upazila.

Being tipped-off that a gang of criminals were taking position in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there around 2:00am, said Sanatan Chakrawarty, additional superintendent of Bogura (sadar circle) police.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcement, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing police to fire back, he added.

At one stage, Akand caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, the additional superintendent of police said.

In Narayanganj,  Mobarak was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Asharier Char in Sonargaon upazila.

Being tipped-off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in night coaches passing through the area, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 4:00am, said Sonargaon police station officer-in-charge Sharafat Ullah.

Sensing the presence of the police, the robbers opened fire on the law enforcerement, prompting them to take action, he said.

After the gunfight, police recovered the bullet-hit body of Mobarak while the others managed to flee the scene, the OC added.

Sharafat Ullah said they recovered one shutter gun and two bullets from the scene.

The law enforcement’s versions of the events, however, could not be verified independently as no versions of the incidents were available immediately either from any witness or from the victims’ families.
