Chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has directed the election officials to take up necessary programmes to dispel doubts about electronic voting machines (EVM) among the people.

The CEC was speaking at the opening ceremony of the training workshop of election officers on how to use EVMs on Sunday. The workshop was held at the election training institute in the capital.

“It is certain that people will have doubts or questions about EVM. EVMs will be of no use if people do not know how to use these. We have to campaign throughout the country to make them understand EVMs, how these work and their advantages,” the EC said.

Also, Nurul Huda said, "We will use EVMs as much as we can. We will not impose more than needed.”

The EC at the time told the election officers that the election commission would only use EVMs lawfully and only if they were skilled enough to use them.

ECNEC approved Tk 40 billion project for the purchase and maintenance of EVMs. Prior to that, the the EC sent a proposal to the law ministry to amend the election laws so that EVMs could be utilized in the national election. Though the ruling Awami League is in favour of EVMs, most of the other political parties are opposed to using the EVMs in the national election
