Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwary on Saturday said a new police team specialising in fighting cybercrime will be formed soon.

The IGP revealed this after attending a programme at the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) headquarters Parade Ground in the city's Uttara area, reports UNB.

“Cybercrime is the biggest challenge facing law enforcement agencies around the world as well as Bangladesh," Patwary said.

"A new police team is being prepared to face the challenge so that no one can create anarchy by spreading rumours using social media."

He warned that rumour-mills would be working overtime to spread confusion as the national elections are knocking on the door. The police are already working to prevent any "cyber anarchy", the country's top cop further said.
Meanwhile, all metropolitan and district police units have been asked to remain alert and monitor social media to protect cybercrime.
