The government may intensify its surveillance on social media in the next three months, said information secretary Abdul Malek.

He was speaking in a view-exchange meeting in Patuakhali's Kuakata on Friday.

The secretary said, "We're now monitoring social networking sites very closely as a group of people spread rumours, objectionable photographs and others intentionally."

"Our surveillance on social networks may be intensified further in the next three months, he added.

The secretary also said that those who spread rumours on social media will be suppressed with an iron hand.
