Five female students of Dhaka University's Ruqayyah Hall began a fast unto death over 4-point demand related to the recently held central students' union (DUCSU) elections, taking up position in front of their dormitories on campus from Wednesday night.

Five students -- Saida Afrin Safi, Rafia Sultana, Shrabanna Shafique Dipti, Joyonti Reza, and Pramik Esha -- of the hall started their strike around 9:30pm, reports UNB.

Their demands include the resignation of Ruqayyah Hall provost professor Zinat Huda, fresh elections to DUCSU, withdrawal of all cases against the independent candidates and their supporters including DUCSU VP-elect Nurul Haq Nuru and ensuring security of all the students on the campus.

One of the strikers, Saida Afrin Safi said, “We will continue our strike until our demands are met. We hope university authority's humanity can be awakened and they concede our logical demand.”

During their strike in front of the hall, their fellow students and hall-mates were demonstrating too, demanding fresh election at the hall and resignation of hall provost professor Zinat Huda, alleging irregularities in the DUCSU polls.

Earlier, four candidates of the opposition panel along with a general student began the hunger strike demanding fresh elections to the DUCSU at the Raju Sculpture on the campus in Tuesday afternoon.
