Chattogram transport workers to go on 24-hr strike

Transport workers in Chattogram declared a 24-hour strike on Dhaka-Chattogram and Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar routes in protest of a bus driver’s killing allegedly by the members of Detective Branch (DB) of Police at Karnaphuli upazila on Monday night, reports UNB.

A regional committee of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation said transport workers would carry out the strike from 6:00pm on Wednesday to 6:00pm on Thursday on 68 district routes connecting Chattogram and 19 local routes.

They demanded immediate arrest of the killers and bringing them to justice.

The deceased was Jalal Uddin, 50, a driver of the Shyamoli Paribahan, from Dinajpur.

A group of men who identified themselves as the detectives stopped the bus, had the driver get down from his vehicle and beat him to death at 8:00pm on Monday after the bus reached Vellapara bridge of the highway, said the bus supervisor Azim Uddin.
