Feni's superintendent of police (SP) Jahangir Alam has been withdrawn for negligence in duty over the murder of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan.

Police headquarters' assistant inspector general (media), Sohel Rana, confirmed this to Prothom Alo on Sunday.

The SP was attached to the police headquarters following the withdrawal today (Sunday).

Jahangir faced the departmental action on recommendations by an investigation committee formed by the police headquarters, he added.

Earlier, Sonagazi police station’s former officer-in-charge Moazzem Hossain was suspended and attached to the Rangpur Range DIG office for negligence in handling the Nusrat murder case.

The probe body's report also suggested suspension of two sub-inspectors -- Md Yusuf and Md Iqbal -- of the police station and their attachment to Khulna Range DIG office and Khagrhachharhi police as departmental action.

According to the report, SP Jahangir came to know about the attempt of setting Nusrat on fire around 10:00am but he did not visit the spot. He rather started for Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Sonagazi upazila of Feni, was set ablaze on 6 April allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against principal Siraj Ud Daula of the madrasa for sexually harassing her.

After fighting for her life for five days, the madrasa girl died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on 10 April.

A total of 21 people have so far been arrested over the murder.
