Gono Forum president Kamal Hossain on Tuesday said a democratic atmosphere and the rule of law are necessary to restore people's ownership of the country, reports UNB.

"We want to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence in a democratic atmosphere. We also want to restore people's ownership of the country by ensuring the rule of law," he said.

Kamal said this while speaking at a joint meeting of Dhaka south and north city units of Gono Forum at its central office in the capital.

He called upon Gono Forum leaders and activists to work for mobilising public support to ensure effective democracy in the country.

Kamal, also the convener of Jatiya Oikya Front, alleged that the ruling Bangladesh Awami League has given a false definition of democracy only to hang onto power.

Speaking at the programme, Gono Forum general secretary Reza Kibria urged the party leaders and activists to remain united and work for strengthening their organisational capacity.

"We'll be able to go to power in the days to come if we remain united and build the party with that goal."
