OC withdrawn over pregnant woman's torture

Nakla police station's officer-in-charge Kazi Shahnewaj has been withdrawn from his post for negligence of duty over the torture of a pregnant housewife in Sherpur in May. 

In this regard, an order had been issued from the police headquarters.

 Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Aminul Islam of Sherpur Sadar Circle, also head of police investigation committee over the incident, confirmed it to Prothom Alo on Saturday.

 He, however, said that OC Shahnewaj would be withdrawn from the Nakla police station as soon as they get an order from the election commission since Nakla upazila parishad election will be held on 18 June.

Meanwhile, sub-inspector Omar Faruk of Nakla police station was attached to Sherpur Police Lines over the same incident.

Doly Khanam, a three-month pregnant housewife, was tied to trees, kicked and punched over a land dispute at Kaida village in Nakla upazila on 10 May. The torture led to her miscarriage.

The victim was admitted Nakla Upazila Health Complex on Friday night as her health deteriorated further. She is now undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Doly's husband, Shafiullah, said to Prothom Alo, "Police high-ups and others visited us and assured of justice."

A video clip of the torture spread in the locality and the social media about a month later. On 12 June, a case was recorded by Nakla police station naming nine people at the order of the police superintendent.

Police arrested Nasima Akter, 40, one of the accused, and produced her before the court which sent her to jail.

Meanwhile, a three-member investigation committee formed by the district police filed its report to the police superintendent on Friday.

Investigations revealed the negligence of duty by the OC and the SI.
