2 killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Two men were killed in what the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) called a gunfight with them at Jajimura Shikolpara in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar on early Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Asmaul Saudagar, 35, son of Rizwan Saudagar of Charmukundi in Chandpur district; and Zabed Mia, 34, son of Jabbar Ali of Basundia in Jashore district.

Tipped off, a team of BGB-2 conducted a drive in the area around 4:30am, said commanding officer of Teknaf BGB-2 lieutenant colonel Mohammad Foysal Khan.

The miscreants opened fire as soon as the border guards reached the spot, triggering a shootout, he added.

BGB members recovered the bodies of Asmaul and Zabed after the gunfight along with 10,000 Yaba pills, a gun and three bullets, the OC said.

According to the human rights body, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in alleged gunfights, crossfires or shootouts with the law enforcement agencies in 2018.

In the first six months of 2019, the number of such killing was at least 200, the rights body said on its website.
